Beginners’ Guide To Electric Fencing

The main function of an electric fence is protection. It is designed to keep away unwanted visitors, prevent trespassing and secure buildings located in remote areas. At the same time, electric fences can be a real danger for small children or pets, so we recommend you to analyze the situation before deciding to install one.

Sometimes, an electric fence can have more disadvantages than advantages.

Insurance companies for example disapprove with this type of fence as they claim that it can cause serious injuries. If a burglar tries to enter your property and gets hurt because of the fence, you may be sued.

Companies that use electric fences to keep out thieves display warning signs in order to discourage them from getting closer. If that doesn’t keep the thief from approaching, the buzzing of the electric fence should do the job.

Why use Electric Fencing for security?

Deter, detect and delay- a high voltage shock combined with a physical barrier will deter anyone from attempting to penetrate the perimeter fence.

The detecting ability of a Nemtek electric fence energizer will give an alarm when the perimeter of the property being protected has been infiltrated. By keeping the perimeter protected using an electric fence, the attempted break-in of the protected area is delayed, giving additional time for a reaction team to respond.

Energizers are designed to supply the electric fence with power. 220 Volts from the main supply are converted to direct current. Non-lethal pulses of 9900 volts are generated to power the fence. Energizers are fitted with batteries to ensure operation even with power failures. The power consumption of electric fences is very low.

Electric fencing can be installed on top of walls. We prefer to install at least 8 electrical wires on square tubing poles on top of walls or palisades. That makes your wall at least 900mm higher. We also do 6, 10 & 12 line wall top electric fencing.

Electric fences are used as a first security barrier.

The function of a wall top electric fence is:

  • To keep intruders outside
  • To secure the residents inside the perimeter
  • The siren that is part of the energizer must go off if tampered with the fence
  • The electric fence alarm can be linked to armed response for extra security

Energizer Types

Security Experts specializes in six different electric fencing energizers designed and they are all manufactured by NEMTEK, South Africa leading electric fence manufacturer, for you to choose from depending on what you want the energizer to do for you.

  • You must earth the energizer properly for your fence to be effective.
  • An earth electrode could be made from copper or any galvanized steel material.
  • Galvanized posts, pipes etc. are suitable and should be driven into the soil at least 1.5m.
  • Don’t use black posts because the covering is insulated.
